Opposing ethical standards

Think of a dilemma that concerns opposing ethical standards. Which one is chosen to follow over the other? Who holds the authority to determine which standards to abide by and which to disregard? Give specific examples...

Well, euthanasia. The opposing ethical standards being what's best for the patient vs. saving lives.

Generally, saving lives has been given the authority, as euthanasia is illegal. Though, I think it should be up to the person who wishes to be euthanized. But it's not, because the authority doesn't lie with the individual.

I know of a recent example of ethical standards conflicting. Firefighters are now being trained to spot signs of terrorist acitivities. This is becuase, unlike police, firefighters don't require warrants to get into buildings. It seems to me like their abusing their power. I'm a little unclear about what ethical standards this deals with, but I'm going to go with no harm, utility, and personal excellence. This development is in favor of no harm and utility becuase it's trying to protect the general population by eliminating the threat of terrorism. However, it violates personal excellence because the firefighters are compromising themselves by abusing their power. It also might dip into autonomy a little bit becuase their violating the rights of those owning the building. You can find a brief article about this at http://www.wqad.com/Global/story.asp?S=7401168.
